The original design of the Golden Gate Bridge prescribed the complete demolition of Fort Point, a historic century-old brick stronghold situated on a point at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Fortunately, Chief Engineer Joseph Strauss insisted on its preservation, and modified the design to straddle the landmark. Here, the summer sun sets through his graceful arch, silhouetting the bridge and fort.
From the Telescopics series.
