Tension

San Francisco, CA, 2007
Limited Edition Pigment Print

The engineer might think of the suspension bridge as a hierarchical structure. The deck's load runs up the secondary cables to the mains, which in turn carry it to the towers, which then dissipate the collected forces into the ground. In reverse, one might visualize this arrangement as a tree - the towers as trunk, main cables as branches, and secondaries as leaves. In this shot, each of the three are seen, bearing their designated burdens.

From the Bridge Tableaux series.
