The country - the vast rural expanses beyond the edges of suburbia - evokes a myriad of feelings, as varied as the populace itself. Urban dwellers see it as a sanctuary and abandon their creature comforts to unwind there. Farmers and loggers view it as a base of operations, and draw sustenance from it. And still others think of the country as an anachronism - an unpleasant reminder of less sophisticated times.
To me, the country speaks to the mental vestiges of my primitive ancestors. The warm, stinging fragrance of campfire, the fading sunset's steel blue, the unseen snap of a twig in the forest - each trigger faint hints of instinctual responses, one thousand generations removed.
Beyond City Limits is an ongoing series that explores subjects in non-urban settings.
